Cummins ISX Quick Sheet

The Cummins ISX is the mainstream engine offered by Cummins for over the road applications. It is also used in the largest motorhomes due to the power and torque ratings.

Designed as a replacement for the forever popular N14 Cummins, the ISX is the next generation of emmision compliant, high horsepower engines.

The Cummins ISX has had two main design changes since its release:

CM570 - The original ISX engine, this engine was released as the replacement for the N14. Designed from the ground up differently than the N14 Cummins, the most noticable difference was the fuel system and the dual overhead cams. The fuel system on the ISX uses metering and timing valves located in the fuel module to regulate fuel to the injectors by front and rear bank. Cummins also added another camshaft dedicated to engine braking.

CM870 - Basically the same as CM570, but with the addition of an EGR valve. The EGR system was installed in late 2002 to meet EPA emmision requirements.

CM871 - Once again, basically the same as the CM870, but this time with the addition of a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). The DPF filters the exhaust, then uses high exhaust temperatures to clean the filter.
